Where America's landfills are running out of room

Every municipal landfill tracked by the U.S. EPA, with the year each one is expected to stop accepting waste. Green states have few landfills closing in the window; red states have most of them closing. Click a state, then a landfill.

Source: U.S. EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) landfill database, September 2024 release. Closure years are EPA's recorded actual or expected dates as of that release; capacity figures are EPA waste-in-place divided by EPA design capacity, shown only where both are published. The LMOP database covers most, but not all, U.S. municipal solid waste landfills and excludes industrial, construction-and-demolition, and hazardous-waste sites. Landfills without published coordinates are not shown.
